Census: Obituary:
"Samuel P. Walker died from injuries in an accident in the lime quarry on his farm property in Somerset Twp. PA. They had discharged a blast to loosen some stone and after the blast found that some of the support beams were unsafe. They were attempting to replace the one beam when a great mass of slate came crashing down upon them. Samuel P. Walker and his brother-in-law, Ezra Baer, were trapped under this. Wilson Walker (brother of Samuel) was also caught by the falling slate, but managed to free himself. His right arm was crushed and bleeding. He went to the mouth of the mine and told some other workers what had happened. They went into the mine to help Samuel and Ezra; and Wilson went to the nearby home of Samuel to tell his wife what had happened and to have someone send for a doctor. Freeing the men from this was very difficult. When they finally did free them, they took them to the home of Samuel where both died. Two doctors arrived, but could do nothing for Samuel and Ezra, but found Wilson's arm to be so seriously injured that they had to amputate it. Wilson was only 20 years old. Samuel only 33 years old."
